honorary member: Ian S. Evans

Dr. Ian S. Evans is Emeritus Reader in Geography, having served the Department of Geography at Durham University, UK, since 1970. He obtained his Bachelor and PhD in Geography from Cambridge University*, and his Master in Geology from Yale University. He has given distinguished service to the community, including the British Society for Geomorphology (BSG) and the Japanese Geomorphological Union (JGU), and to the disciplines of geomorphometry, glaciology and glacial geomorphology. He authored many journal articles and books. He is an Honorary Member of the Quaternary Research Association, UK, and has become the first chair of the Geomorphometry Society established this year. He is a long-term member of JGU, and has been on the editorial board of the Transactions of JGU since 1994. He also made a significant contribution to the 5th ICG in Tokyo in 2001, as the main chair of the landform modeling session.

Thus the JGU is in his debt.

The JGU is honored to bestow Dr. Ian S. Evans an Honorary Membership.
On October 3, 2009, the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the JGU, in Kyoto.

* Prof. Tom Dunne told the following tail to Hiroshi Suwa. Ian Evans and Tom Dunne graduated from Cambridge University, England in the same class in 1964 . They both traveled to the United States for graduate work. Ian went to Yale University and Tom went to Johns Hopkins University. They have worked on very different kinds of geomorphological problems, but have remained in contact with each other for the past 45 years. Ian and Tom agreed on the appearance of this tale in the article about the new honorary members in the near future volume of Transaction of JGU.
