Professor Stanley A. Schumm is University Distinguished Professor, Colorado State University, and one of the most outstanding geomorphologists in the world. His distinguished contributions to geomorphology were well summarized in the introduction to him when he was awarded the Senior Fellowship of the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) at the Fifth International Conference on Geomorphology (5th ICG) held in Tokyo, 2001. The introduction appeared in the Transactions of Japanese Geomorpholgical Union (Vol. 23, No. 1, pp. 32-35).
Professor Schumm first came to Japan in 1984, when the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science invited him as a distinguished scientist. He willingly became a member of the JGU at that time, which the JGU is quite proud of. During his stay for two months he had been in many fields in Japan and made a special address at the JGU’s symposium entitled The Fluvial System, the theme of which derived from the title of his famous book. Based partly upon this address, he published in the Transactions of JGU (Vol. 6, No.1, pp. 1-18) a “thought-provoking paper”, which is Prof. Slaymaker’s expression, on the sources of geologic uncertainty. This paper has been read widely in the world, because it subsequently led to his 1991 book ‘To Interpret the Earth’, and hence plays an important role in the information concerning the high-level of the JGU around the world of geomorphologists.
His second time visit to Japan was in 2001, when the Organizing Committee of the 5th ICG invited him as a distinguished guest to present a plenary lecture at the Conference. His attendance shown in the program of 5th ICG Third Circular resulted in an increase in the number of participants to the Conference beyond our expectations.
In addition he kindly accepted many JGU members at the Department of Earth Resources, Colorado State University, as guest researchers and students including Drs. Takasuke Suzuki, Shunji Ouchi, Takahisa Mizuyama and Chang Jui-Chin.
Thus the great development of the JGU is in his debt.
The JGU is honored to award Professor Stanley A. Schumm an Honorary Member.
On May 14, 2005, the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the JGU, at Fukuoka.
