honorary member: Harley J. Walker

Professor Harley J. Walker. Boyd Professor Emeritus, Louisiana State University, is a specialist in coastal geomorphology. He is one of the most famous geomorphologists in the world and is nicknamed Jess, because he is not only a very friendly colleague but also the first Honorary Fellow of the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG). The creation of the IAG in 1989 was due to the exceptional collaboration between him and Denys Brunsden. Jess organized Newsletters from No. 1 to No. 6, Questionnaires, the Directory of Geomorphologists, and the Histories of Geomorphology published at the Conference in Frankfurt.

Professor Walker has contributed to the development of the Japanese Geomorphological Union (JGU) continuously from its establishment up to today as follows:

He joined us in the party held at the TERADAYA. a historically very famous inn located at Fushimi, Kyoto, on October 6, 1979, when the Japanese Geomorphological Union (JGU) was established, and he immediately offered his congratulations to the establishment of the JGU. He should be proud of his honor of becoming the first foreign member of the JGU’s 63 foreign members, which make up about 10 % of JGU’s regular members today. Mainly Professor Walker, using all chances and submitting an introductory letter to many journals, has promoted the establishment of the JGU in its early stage around the world of geomorphologists.

The ]GU should express its sincere thanks to Professor Walker, who had made every effort and great cooperation to make the 5th ICG successful from the beginning of the preparation to the closing.

In addition he had kindly accepted many Japanese geomorphologists at the Department of Geography and Anthropology, Louisiana State University, as guest researchers including Professors Eiju Yatsu and Takayuki Mizuyama who together played an important role in the establishment of the JGU.

Thus the great development of the JGU is in his debt.

The JGU is honored to award Professor Harley J. Walker an Honorary Member.

On May 14, 2005, the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the JGU, at Fukuoka.
